What was it?

During the JITNEY run at The Old Vic, Kestrel worked with with Headlong Theatre to share four powerful documentary films that we created alongside award-winning filmmaker Dorothy Allen-Pickard. Inspired by one of the central characters in Jitney, the screening was then followed by a talk hosted by Tinuke Craig (Director of Jitney) and Eleanor Henderson (Artistic Director of Kestrel).

This was the second outing for these beautiful films, after a first screening at the Close-Up Cinema in Shoreditch in April 2022. All four were screened onto the back wall of the Jitney set to the largest audience the Old Vic has had for a Voices Off event since the pandemic began.

Jitney, of course, is an American play written in the 70s. The After Time films were made in 2022 and are firmly centred on the specific experience of navigating life after prison here in the UK. But the threads that bind the two together were explored in the Q&A that followed, focusing on discussions of gentrification, father & son relationships and the close relationship between fiction and nonfiction.
